Jacques Barraband (1768-1809) was a French illustrator of mainly tropical birds. He used stuffed copies for his work. We have made a selection from the birds of paradise that he has drawn.
Birds of Paradise (Paradisaeidae) are a family of birds from the order of songbirds, which is almost limited to New Guinea and surrounding islands and northeastern Australia. Birds of paradise are decked out with very luxuriant feathers. This is the result of far-advanced sexual selection that was possible due to the lack of natural enemies.
